Lycos

Lycos is the large West-European portal, and also searching system. A portal besides the searching system plugs in itself many other divisions. 

Now Lycos does not suport the database, and uses the database of FAST, Direct Hit and ODP (DMOZ). But however Lycos remains the very popular searching system. 

In 1998 Lycos purchased the searching system HotBot,  that to this time lost the popularity among users. Lycos intended to heave up prestige of this searching system due to introduction of innovative methods of raising of rating.

But in summer of 2000, Lycos declared, that no longer would support the searching robot and for delivery of results of search the database of FAST will be used. It was also announced entering into partner contracts with ODP (DMOZ) and Direct Hit. By reason of abandonment from own searching machine her imperfection became, that resulted in frequent failures in-process. 

Then Lycos bought the searching system HotBot, but she was left as a separate server, although some changes in the algorithms of search were done. 

In October, 2000 Lycos was bought by a company Terra Networks, and became her subdivision known as Terra Lycos. 

As talked already, Lycos mainly uses the databases of FAST,  that counts more than 600 million proindex pages. Lycos also uses the database of searching catalogue of ODP (DMOZ), that counts 2 million pages and separate programmatic files.
